The Tubi original Romeo and Juliet Killers is essentially a Lifetime movie with a few nude scenes peppered in for good measure. It's based on the true story of Tylar Witt and Steve Colver, teen lovers who killed Tylar's mother in 2009. If you ever wondered whether The Amy Fisher Story would have been better if Drew Barrymore had appeared topless, here's your answer.
Leigha Sinnott plays Tylar, a rebellious teen with a sharp talent for manipulating her mother. Zachary Roozen plays Steve, her equally manipulative boyfriend. Kelly Sullivan plays Joanne, Tylar's hapless mother. Believing that Steve is gay and his relationship with Tylar is platonic, Joanne lets him move in with them. Eventually she learns they've been banging on the sly, which presents a serious problem for Steve, because their age gap makes his relationship with her a felony. Steve and Tylar solve this problem by stabbing Joanne to death and having more sex while smeared in her blood.
Lindsay Hartley's background in TV movies and daytime soaps is apparent in her directorial style. Lots of cheap sensationalism and leaden melodrama. Since this is a Tubi original, she has more leeway when it comes to graphic content than she would on the Lifetime Network, but the storytelling sensibilities are mostly the same.
The nudity and sex are a little discomforting given the subject matter. Granted, Leigha Sinnott is a grown woman, but in real life, Tylar Witt was 14 years old when these events occurred. To make matters worse, the ending implies that Tylar was a cunning femme fatale who callously threw her adult boyfriend under the bus. Even by direct-to-video true crime standards, this movie is kinda tasteless.
4 out of 10.
